Driving Tips in Singapore

2nd
  • Seatbelt must be worn both in the front and the
rear by all occupants of the car.

  • Using your handphone while driving is prohibited
in Singapore. This includes driving with one hand
holding a handphone while communicating with
another person on that phone while the vehicle is
paging or messaging with a handphone,
dialling a phone number or pressing a button to
receive a call are also against the law.

  • Under Singapore law, police may convict a driver of
driving under the influence of alcohol if the driver
has more than the legal limit of alcohol, 35
micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath,
or 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of
blood, whether or not the driver seems to be in
control of the vehicle. However, police may also
convict a driver who has not exceeded the legal
amount of alcohol if he/she does not seem to
have control of the car due to alcohol consumption.

  • Electronic Road Pricing (ERP)
When using the roads in the inner city area
and expressways during peak-hour, you will
be expected to pay a toll. Instead of toll booths,
Singapore has outfitted every car with an
In-Vehicle Unit (IU) located above the steering
wheel which, when a prepaid cash card is
inserted, automatically deducts the cost of
the toll when you pass through one of the
gantries that have been installed on the roads
affected. Make sure your cash card has
enough funds or you will be fined.

  • Cash Card
A cash card is needed for your IU device for
payment of ERP charges. The cash card can
also be used for payment for parking charges.
You can purchase a cash card from Hawk or at
7-eleven stores and most petrol stations.

  • Parking
There are two types of payment for car parking
in Singapore. Car parks with a scanner at the
gate uses your cash card in your IU for
payment; while open-air street parking and car
parks without a scanner requires the use of
coupons to pay for parking. Parking coupons
can also be purchased from Hawk or at
7-eleven stores and most petrol stations. Look for signboards which indicate parking rates
and free parking times as they vary between
    car parks.
